Excellent idea and demonstrates community need for youth to continue traditions. Questions about program goals aligning with funding request; paying for grant writer as a part of summer institute; appears to have a lot of adults - is that direct programming to adults or adults who assist students. |

The objectives don't say anything about the traditional arts and they should if funding from this grant is to be given. I applaud this organization's focus on deserving children from low income families but the project needs to be more focused on the traditional arts as a strong component of the proposal. I would like to have a far better curriculum example that engaging students in drawing flowers, fruits, and animals while drumming takes place. The lessons need more depth, creativity, and cultural experience. I'm not always sure the funding is intended to go to traditional arts. The evaluation form doesn't say anything about traditional arts. |

This project seems like it would have a significant impact on youth. I have a bit of confusion about the budget. Line 5 of expenses lists a range of $18k-$22k for the Outside Fees and Services: other, but I can not find a place that enumerates those costs. $10k to the grant writer seems to indicate a part-time salary to me, but on Number 6, the box for "Applicant has no paid management staff." |

Clarity issues throughout the narrative. In the future, it would be helpful to have multiple people review the text for clarity before submitting. The project provides vital services to families and the proposal clearly communicates how these programs serve their needs. The activities section is vague, and I'm not understanding which programs are included in this proposal. The partnerships section is confusing because it's unclear if or how each of these partners is directly involved in the proposed activities. There are some program details in the Timeline and Impact sections, but it would be better to include these details at the beginning of the proposal. I'm also unclear which are the 6 proposed events referenced in the Impact section. Goals and objectives section could be improved by adding measurable goals such as number of programs, number of children served, or even specific topics/art forms covered through programming. Fiscal Condition section: Half of the information written in this section does not apply and should be included instead in the activities or timeline sections. Need to provide more information about the fiscal health and track record of the organization. Budget: Use the budget information section to explain increases in expenses over the last 2 years and clarify personnel expenses (applicant indicates they have no paid management staff). Accessibility section could benefit from adding information about plans to improve accessibility. For example, adding accessibility information to website or marketing materials or future plans to address accessibility for hearing, visual, and intellectual disabilities. |

The proposal for this project is confusing. A lot of the content seems focused on the more general activities of the presenting organization and it is not clear which activities will take place as part of this particular funded project versus other projects implemented by the organization. In the project description, for example, no concrete details are given about what activities will occur during the summer institute. More details are provided in the timeline, however these details could still be greatly expanded to make a stronger application. Asking students to write poems or draw objects is not in and of itself a strong project for a folk and traditional arts grant. The project needs to better demonstrate how children/audiences are directly engaging with tradition bearers and what the specifics of those traditions look like. While providing this opportunity and basic needs for the community is absolutely, imperatively important, an application for a folk and traditional arts program should focus more on the traditions themselves and the specific artists and tradition-bearers that the children will engage with. As an example, one way to strengthen future applications would be to include instructor/artist bios. |
